Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's controversial two-day visit to Lebanon in October has evoked mixed reactions among rival Lebanese factions already sharply divided over key political issues and greatly influenced by foreign powers which are key players in Lebanon. Ahmadinejad's visit, his first to Lebanon since his re-election in disputed elections last year, has also raised world concerns, mainly in the United States and Israel, the two countries which are frequently targeted by the Iranian leader's virulent rhetoric. The visit came as Iran is reeling under tough new sanctions imposed by the West and the United Nations over Tehran's nuclear program. By all means, Ahmadinejad's visit carried both internal and external political messages. In particular, the visit sent a strong political message to both the U.S. and its strategic ally, Israel that Tehran is a key player in the region and cannot be isolated. "The Americans are being told: 'If you isolate Iran, Iran will corner you in Lebanon and elsewhere," said an editorial in the independent Lebanese daily AL ANWAR on October 16, two days after Ahmadinejad ended his visit to Lebanon. "The message is that if Washington wants solutions in the region ... it must knock on Iran's door." The U.S. and its Western allies seek to isolate Iran in an attempt to force it to halt its controversial nuclear program, which Tehran insists is for civilian purposes, but the West believes otherwise.
